What to see and do in Pitigliano in a week

Staying in Pitigliano for an entire week will allow you to deeply discover the secrets and unique features of the city of tuff, experience fully the three main aspects that characterize it (history, nature, food and wine) and enjoy a vast territory, still largely unexplored in some ways.

Day 3

While you can spend the first two or three days in the town (we invite you to read what to see and do in Pitigliano over a weekend), the third day can be dedicated to discovering the cities of tuff: we are talking about the two towns that, together with Pitigliano, make up this trio and are just a few minutes away from the town, namely Sorano and its fraction Sovana.

Sorano is known as “the Matera of Tuscany,” and this already hints at the beauty and uniqueness of this town. The Orsini Fortress, the Masso Leopoldino, the Vie Cave, and the thermal baths are just some of the beautiful attractions located a few minutes by car from Pitigliano.

Sovana, a fraction of the municipality of Sorano, is instead a real gem of medieval origin that has preserved its appearance and atmosphere. Here you will find many monuments to discover, but my advice is to visit the Archaeological Park of the City of Tuff, which is the museum network of the Municipality of Sorano, including the Etruscan necropolis of Sovana, a historical route of rare importance and beauty on a global scale due to its tombs. Also noteworthy, still part of the Sorano museum network, is the City of Vitozza, located in another fraction of the Municipality called San Quirico. Sovana, for hiking enthusiasts, can also be reached on foot by passing through the ancient Via Cava and the road of Pian de’ Conati.

Day 4

This area of Tuscany is rich in thermal waters. The nearest thermal baths to Pitigliano are in Sorano, a beautiful facility located about five kilometers from the town, halfway between the two tuff cities. By paying an entrance fee, you can access the complex, which consists of three pools, two of which are natural, along with various services. While the Sorano baths are the closest, the most famous are undoubtedly the Saturnia baths, about a twenty-minute drive from Pitigliano. Surrounded by greenery, they are accessible in two ways: the first, completely free, allows you to reach the Mulino Waterfalls, the famous terraced pools known worldwide. A few hundred meters away, you will find the actual thermal structure, the Terme di Saturnia, a five-star natural spa and golf resort, where you can access by purchasing a ticket and enjoy, among many services and comforts, a bath in the historic natural pools that were already famous in Ancient Rome.

In addition to the thermal area, this territory (located in the Municipality of Manciano, at the gates of Maremma) offers the opportunity to visit some beautiful villages, such as Saturnia, located to the north of the thermal complex, and Montemerano, about three kilometers away. Both are definitely worth a visit.

Day 5

Changing sides of the Grosseto province and crossing into Lazio, you can dedicate an entire day to visiting Lake Bolsena and the towns of the Tuscia region. It’s about a half-hour drive from Pitigliano to a very rich area in terms of history, nature, landscape, and food and wine. Around Lake Bolsena, a volcanic bathing lake, there are several towns such as Bolsena, Capodimonte, Marta, and Montefiascone. Here, during the summer season, you can spend a lovely day of relaxation and sunshine as if you were by the sea. These towns are also appreciated in the winter season when the lake offers glimpses and landscapes of rare beauty.

Another town close to Lake Bolsena is Acquapendente, which is also very interesting for its history and nature. If you want to head towards Umbria (always less than an hour from Pitigliano), you cannot miss two famous places connected in some ways to Pitigliano: Orvieto in Umbria and the now famous Civita di Bagnoregio, the “dying city” (again, in the province of Viterbo). These two locations are often associated with Pitigliano due to their appearance and the common thread given by the tuff. Many tourists choose them together as must-see stops in central Italy. Not far from these places is also the historic city of Viterbo, which is also beautiful and worth a visit.

Day 6

It’s time to head up to higher altitudes. Moving towards the province of Siena, we find Monte Amiata with all its villages rich in history. On the Grosseto side, Santa Fiora, Arcidosso, and Castel del Piano; on the Siena side, Abbaddia San Salvatore and Piancastagnaio, among the closest to Pitigliano. It’s an hour from our town, and these stops are very interesting both in winter for the ski season and in summer for a cool day in the mountains. Also, if we look towards the Siena side, we are not far from the Val d’Orcia and the famous towns of Pienza, Montalcino, and Montepulciano.

Day 7

Before the week ends, head towards the coast to visit its beauties. If you’re in summer, a day or more on the beaches of the Monte Argentario area is a must; but even in winter, they deserve a visit due to wonderful places like the Uccellina Park, Capalbio with its famous Tarot Garden, and Orbetello.

In the evening, when you return to Pitigliano, never forget to take a walk around the town, and maybe enjoy one last aperitif at a bar or wine shop and have dinner at one of the numerous restaurants in the town. The week has come to an end. As you can see from our suggestions, Pitigliano’s particular location allows you to reach numerous and diverse attractions, all less than an hour’s drive from the city of tuff.
