The Infiorata is a traditional event that has been held for years to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi. What starts as a strictly religious celebration evolves into a popular event, with the participation of the people of Pitigliano and various local businesses.
The Infiorata is part of the tradition of decorations for the so-called “baroque festivals,” which originated in Rome during the 17th century. These festivals involved creating pictures using flowers, starting from St. Peter’s Basilica. One of its earliest proponents was the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who, starting from St. Peter’s, extended the practice to the Roman castles. It continued into the 18th century, when, in 1778, the first Infiorata of Corpus Christi was held in Genzano.
The origin of this festival is actually much older: it began in Belgium in 1246 to exalt the devotion to the Eucharist sacrament.
With the collaboration of the Tourist Information Office, the Pro Loco, and other public and private channels, active participation in the event has been extended to visitors who, every year, come in increasing numbers not only as spectators but also as participants, with the opportunity to create floral artworks alongside the local residents.
