Pitigliano’s Jewish Cemetery: a place of reflection and identity
Just outside the town of Pitigliano, along Provincial Road 74, you will find the entrance gate to the Jewish Cemetery.
Located below the present-day Christian cemetery, its origins date back to the mid-16th century, when David de Pomis, personal physician to Count Niccolò IV Orsini, requested a burial area for his prematurely deceased companion.
Within the cemetery, along the gently sloping ground and among centuries-old cypress trees, you can still see the earliest simple gravestones.
Of particular artistic interest are several 19th-century monuments that display remarkable sculptural craftsmanship. Made of fine marble, they feature human figures, including a young girl resting on a marble drapery and, a short distance away, an angel with large wings.
