The Infiorata is a traditional event that has been held for years on the feast of Corpus Christi. From a strictly religious festival, it has evolved into a popular one, involving the people of Pitigliano and various businesses.
The Infiorata belongs to the tradition of decorations for the so-called “Baroque festivals,” born in Rome during the 17th century, which consisted of creating paintings with flowers, starting with the Vatican Basilica. Among its early proponents was the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who, from St. Peter’s, extended it to the Castelli Romani, where it continued into the 18th century when, in 1778, the first Infiorata of Corpus Christi was held in Genzano.
The origin of this celebration is actually much older: it was born, in fact, in Belgium in 1246, to exalt the cult of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
With the collaboration of the Tourist Information Office, the Pro Loco, and other public and private channels, active participation in the event has been extended to visitors, who, every year, flock not only as spectators but also as participants, thus having the opportunity to create floral works alongside the citizens.
