The city of Pitigliano is located in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany, in the heart of the Maremma, in the area defined as the area dei tufi. It borders with the municipalities of Sorano and Manciano and, to the south, with the municipalities of upper Lazio included in the province of Viterbo: Farnese, Ischia di Castro, Latera and Valentano. Perched on a tuffaceous peninsula sloping down to the valley floor, surrounded by the Lente river and the Meleta and Prochio streams, today it has about 3,500 inhabitants.
Arriving in Pitigliano from the sea, along the SR 74 Maremmana, passing the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary, we are suddenly enraptured by the chromaticity of the tuff and the natural beauty of the landscape, made unique by the characteristic houses clinging to each other on a natural terrace volcanic, suspended in the blue sky.
Pitigliano preserves numerous archaeological elements which have alternated since the most remote times; starting from the first protohistoric, then Etruscan and Roman settlements up to the Middle Ages, when in the 12th century it was included in the large fiefdom of the Aldobrandeschi; then the Orsini counts took turns and, lastly, the noble Medici family. In the Middle Ages a small Jewish community settled in Pitigliano, of which it is still possible to visit the Sinagoga with the rooms below.
