The Monumento al Villano

The unmistakable sculpture, concerning the economic engine of our fellow citizens, recalls the Villano with his Donkey, which was an indispensable element linked to peasant culture. Considered the real support to man's work effort, it contributed significantly to economic improvement. The bronze representation attracts numerous visitors due to its particular artistic expressiveness, also cheered by the suggestive panorama that unfolds to the horizon. The realization of this important work conveys to posterity the sacrifices made for a better tomorrow: "To us posterity and sons of peasants, the duty to erect a monument where the man and the donkey express the work, the effort, the suffering and the hope of a better life”.

The Monumento alla Progenie Ursinea

At the edge of Piazza Gregorio VII, stands a sculptural work in travertine with a square base, in which interesting bas-reliefs can be observed. The monument, created for the exaltation of the Ursinea progeny, is enclosed in a single organic body. Above, the buccellato vase and the bear which has, reproduced on the shield, the heraldic insignia of Niccolo III Orsini did not belong to the monument. The entire work carried out in 1490 proposes decorative and warlike elements in the mirrors, while, in the heraldic representation, the insignia of the community of Pitigliano are impressed for the first time. The monument was originally placed inside the courtyard of the castle, and was part of a single solution for the architectural enrichment of the count's palace.

The Macerie

At the beginning of Via Zuccarelli, a large window encloses an area that bears witness to the enormous catastrophe of the bombing of Pitigliano, which took place in the late afternoon of 7 June 1944, in which about ninety people perished, including old, young people and children. It was very painful to describe and comment on the pitiful recovery of the poor mangled bodies, innocent victims of an absurd war which wounded our country to death.

The Acquedotto Mediceo

Traveling along the Via Cavour viaduct, on one side we admire the panorama that forms the backdrop to the slender pylon of the aqueduct with its thirteen high arches. The first structural work of the aqueduct was commissioned by Count Ildebrandino II Orsini in the year 1466, necessary to regulate the water and direct it to the count's palace and also for use by the population. About two centuries later, when the county passed to the Lordship of the Medici, the community of Pitigliano asked to be able to intervene to restore the conveyance of water from four springs beyond the town. The works began in 1638 with the construction of a new aqueduct, structured with a double arch resting on a pillar on the first moat, passing along the bastioned walls until it climbed over the second deep moat with a tall pillar on which two arches rest, today rendered as a symbol of the town.

The Antica Fonte

In the large Piazza della Repubblica, beyond a civil structure, the continuation of the aqueduct path ends at a new body with a slender architectural structure composed of five arches with parapets and overhanging spheres representing the grand ducal lordship. Today the source is completely remodeled from its original appearance, presenting a large basin resting on a parapet in which, in addition to the presence of stone fragments depicting the heraldic bear of the Orsini, the two new cast iron masks, similar in expression faces to the impetuosity of the two rivers, water gushes.
