Every year, on March 19, one of the most anticipated events in the country is organized: the Torciata di San Giuseppe. This is a very ancient rite that mixes Etruscan traditions and Christian rituals and consists of burning, during the night of San Giuseppe’s Day, a number of faggots that thus give rise to a huge and impressive bonfire.
The atmosphere created on this occasion will result in a special and intense charm, a unique and unforgettable experience. Take advantage of this opportunity to attend one of Pitigliano’s most anticipated events all year.
The Vie Cave, also called tagliate or in dialect cavoni, are ancient sacred roads from Etruscan times, partially carved into volcanic rock (tuff) about two thousand seven hundred years ago. They were used to transport the dead to the so-called city of the dead: hence the reason for the adjacent necropolis.
Not all Vie Cave are of Etruscan origin. Some, in fact, were built in medieval times as an alternative road and were traveled by humans and animals.
