The city of Pitigliano is located in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany<\/strong>, in the heart of the Maremma<\/strong>, in the area defined as the area dei tufi<\/em><\/strong>. It borders with the municipalities of Sorano and Manciano and, to the south, with the municipalities of upper Lazio included in the province of Viterbo: Farnese, Ischia di Castro, Latera and Valentano. Perched on a tuffaceous peninsula sloping down to the valley floor, surrounded by the Lente<\/strong> river and the Meleta<\/strong> and Prochio<\/strong> streams, today it has about 3,500 inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Arriving in Pitigliano from the sea, along the SR 74 Maremmana, passing the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary<\/strong>, we are suddenly enraptured by the chromaticity of the tuff and the natural beauty of the landscape<\/strong>, made unique by the characteristic houses clinging to each other on a natural terrace volcanic, suspended in the blue sky.<\/p>\n

Pitigliano preserves numerous archaeological elements<\/strong> which have alternated since the most remote times; starting from the first protohistoric<\/strong>, then Etruscan<\/strong> and Roman<\/strong> settlements up to the Middle Ages<\/strong>, when in the 12th century it was included in the large fiefdom of the Aldobrandeschi<\/strong>; then the Orsini<\/strong> counts took turns and, lastly, the noble Medici<\/strong> family. In the Middle Ages a small Jewish community<\/strong> settled in Pitigliano, of which it is still possible to visit the Sinagoga<\/a> with the rooms below.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
